A single number from 0 to 100 describing how Canadian a product genuinely is, and the four factors behind it.
The four factors
Manufacturing location
Where the last substantial transformation of the product happened. Assembly in Canada scores highest; imported finished goods score lowest.
Ownership
Whether the brand is Canadian-owned and headquartered here, or a Canadian division of a foreign parent.
Input sourcing
The share of raw materials, ingredients and components sourced within Canada.
Employment and operations
Canadian jobs, distribution and support attached to the product line.
Origin labels
- Product of Canada
- Nearly all significant content and processing is Canadian.
- Made in Canada
- Last substantial transformation in Canada, with some imported content.
- Canadian Brand
- A Canadian brand that manufactures at least partly abroad.
- Canadian Owned
- Canadian ownership, with production and sourcing largely outside Canada.
- International
- Neither Canadian-owned nor Canadian-made; listed for comparison.
Where the data comes from
Scores are compiled from brand disclosures, product labelling, public corporate records and merchant listings. Where a figure cannot be confirmed we score conservatively and say so in the product's rationale rather than inferring a higher score. We do not sell score placement, and sponsored listings can never override a score.
Ratings and member stories
Ratings shown on a business are aggregate scores published elsewhere, for example a merchant's public review average, with the source named and dated. We store the score and the number of reviews only, never review text, and we show a rating only when there are enough reviews to be meaningful. A business with no rating is never penalised, it simply shows no rating. Ratings never affect the Canadian Score.
Member stories are researched from the business's own website and public press, drafted with AI assistance, edited by the business, then reviewed by us before publishing. They are clearly labelled as member features and do not change how a listing is scored or ranked.
