Consumable or useful. Nothing that needs a vase.
The brief for a host gift is narrow: it should be consumable or useful, it should not require a vase, and it should not compete with the meal.
Consumable and Canadian
Ontario or BC wine, Quebec cider, prairie honey, Maritime salt, small-batch preserves, single-origin coffee roasted in-country. All defensible, all finished.
Useful and quiet
Linen tea towels, a maple cutting board, ceramic serving bowls, beeswax wraps. Nothing that asks the host to find storage on the spot.
What to skip
Cut flowers without a vase, anything scented for a kitchen in use, and novelty items that will be politely rehomed by January.
