Canadian Thanksgiving is in October. Half the gift guides online still get that wrong.

The short answer: build the year around eight fixed dates and two personal ones per household. Everything else is optional. Budgets below are what Canadians actually spend, in Canadian dollars, not aspirational figures.

Winter

January: New Year hosting and the post holiday restock. Pantry, coffee and glassware, twenty five to seventy five dollars. February: Valentine's Day on the 14th, seventy five to two hundred dollars, and Family Day on the third Monday in most provinces, which is a games and food occasion rather than a gift occasion. In Quebec it is not a holiday at all.

March and April: Easter falls on April 5 in 2026. Chocolate from a Canadian chocolatier and one durable item beats a basket of foil. Twenty five to seventy five dollars.

Spring

May: Mother's Day on the 10th, seventy five to two hundred and fifty dollars, and the Victoria Day long weekend on the 18th, which opens the garden and cottage season. Plants, tools and outdoor textiles.

June: Father's Day on the 21st, seventy five to two hundred dollars, plus graduations and the start of wedding season. National Indigenous Peoples Day on the 21st is a good moment to buy directly from Indigenous owned makers, though it is a day of recognition rather than a gifting occasion.

Summer

July 1: Canada Day. This is the strongest Canadian made gifting moment of the year and almost nobody treats it as one. Host gifts, Canadian sparkling wine, flags of the useful kind, twenty five to one hundred dollars.

August and the Labour Day long weekend on September 5 to 7: host gifts, coolers, blankets, and the last farm stand run of the year.

Autumn

October: Canadian Thanksgiving on Monday October 12, 2026. Host gifts of forty to one hundred dollars, and the point at which serious Christmas shopping should begin if you want Canadian made items that require lead time.

November: Remembrance Day on the 11th is not a gifting occasion. Black Friday and Cyber Monday fall on November 27 and 30, and Canadian makers rarely discount as deeply as importers because their margins are thinner. Buy for value, not for the percentage off.

December

Christmas, one hundred to five hundred dollars per household member, with Canadian made orders placed by the end of November because small producers batch rather than warehouse. Hanukkah begins the evening of December 4 in 2026. Boxing Day on the 26th is the Canadian institution the calendars from elsewhere always miss, and it is the best day of the year to buy big ticket Canadian goods.

The two personal dates

Birthdays and anniversaries outrank every fixed date above in emotional weight and are the easiest to plan for, because you already know them a year ahead. Set the reminder for three weeks out, which is exactly the lead time a Canadian maker needs.
